From the Vinyl Vault: Keith Jarrett and His Survivors of the 1970s
KRTU Radio Station

Kory Cook, KRTU Music Director

Artist: Keith Jarrett
Album: Survivor’s Suite
Released: 1977 (Recorded: 1976)
Label: ECM 1085

“Survivor’s Suite” opens with leader Keith Jarrett, known primarily as a piano player, exhibiting an open call on bass recorder and setting the tone for a meeting of the minds that brings together many sounds of jazz and improvisation from its traditions to the fusion and avant-garde styles that came to fruition in the 1970s. Rugged Texas tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman joins a rhythm section of players who often visit the catalog of another Texas-born saxophonist, icon Ornette Coleman. But this is no cover record. Instead, the four-piece presents a masterwork for the ages.

Since adopting a 17-hour jazz format in 2002, KRTU’s on-air programming has been recognized for its professionalism and quality. This album is one of four seminal albums from 1976/77, reviewed by KRTU staff, that share those same qualities while representing the diversity of jazz styles that play on KRTU everyday (often every hour!) -  traditional and straight-ahead, big band, fusion and the avant-garde.
