On Saturday, September 17th and Sunday, September 18th, the 33rd annual Jazz'SAlive will take place in Travis Park, and is presented by the San Antonio Parks Foundation. Free and open to the public, the event features two stages of diverse jazz performances, the Children’s Symposium introducing kids to different areas of music study, an impromptu jam session "after party" at the St. Anthony, food, and more.

ABOUT THE LINEUP
Four O’Clock Five: A gifted new jazz quintet on the scene, the Four O'Clock Five has quickly gained the reputation as having a mature, memorable sound and skillfulness at impressing its audience at its host venues and in recordings. It specializes in original composition, featuring its ever-growing repertoire of fresh charts at festivals and venues and on radio and television. Composed of high school and early college students with eight years of TMEA All-State ensemble experience between them, the Four O'Clock Five frequently collaborates with other young artists in the pursuit of its creed: to tirelessly strive for new levels of musical creativity while involving the next generation of musicians in the artistic process. The Azul Experience: The Azul Experience is a multi-talented group of musicians made up of Air Force veterans who have individually toured with the prestigious Air Force Entertainment “Tops in Blue” showcase. The band features Darryl McEachin (keyboards, co-founder), Godfery Smith (drums, co-founder), Henry Roberson (bass) and Chris Knox Sr. (guitar). The group has opened for smooth jazz keyboardist Brian Culbertson, and backed other noted smooth jazz artists to include Julian Vaughn and Elizabeth Mis. They have also backed local jazz artists Billy Ray Sheppard and Onel Jimenez. Individually the band members also support a number of noted local artists to include Ruben V, PM Soul, Europa and Melina Narezo. The Azul Experience also includes five equally talented vocalists who are also Air Force veterans who have all toured with “Tops in Blue” and collectively, can cover a variety of musical styles and genres. Sergio Lara: For over 20 years, guitarist Sergio Lara has been respected and considered as one of the best artists in acoustic contemporary instrumental music. His last recording with Lara & Reyes “World Jazz”, received a “Latin Grammy Award” nomination for “Best Instrumental Pop Album” in 2001. Perhaps better known as the founder and leader of the Latin guitar duo Lara & Reyes, Sergio has explored a great variety of styles that show his eclectic taste. Read more...
Dr. Zog: Born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas in a musically cultural town on the border of Louisiana and Texas and a hotbed of good times zydeco music. Zog took his swampadelic style of music to Austin, TX. in 1989 and began performing at roadhouses and festivals throughout Central Texas. He has a deep understanding of roots music and plays music to uplift and funkify audiences with a positive message. Read more...
Lee “Sparky” Thomason: Lee “Sparky” Thomason is a trumpet player, composer, arranger and educator from Rockdale, TX. Sparky is a current member of the Temple Jazz Orchestra, legendary Tejano band Tortilla Factory and Austin’s Duck Soup. After attending McLennan Community College and studying with the master trumpet teacher Dave Hibbard, he joined the Air Force to become part of the Band of the West and toured with the Dimensions in Blue Jazz Orchestra. Thomason has performed with Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Brian Lynch, Conrad Herwig, Ed Calle and Frank Mantooth, to name a few. On the educational side Sparky has also provided key trumpet instruction to some of San Antonio’s current jazz trumpet players: Pat Murray, Curtis Calderon, Karlos Elizondo, Kathleen Janert and Logan Keese.
Tony Bray and One Too Many: Saxophonist Tony Bray studied jazz improvisation and jazz pedagogy with renowned educator Jerry Coker at the University of Tennessee. He also had the opportunity to study under William Scarlett, Bennie Wallace and Warne Marsh during this time. After college he went on to teach theory and production classes as part of the Commercial Music program at the Antelope Valley College in California. He was also responsible for setting up the first “Small Jazz Group” program at Cal State Northridge. Since then, Tony traveled the world as a sax player and keyboardist, playing music on cruise ships and in clubs and casinos from Las Vegas to Singapore. He currently is a regular part of the Austin music scene as he performs with a countless number of groups. Read more...
Wasabi Big Band: The sophisticated sights and sounds of the Wasabi Big Band will transport you to another era where show bands and dance bands were all the rage. A “little big band” consisting of 11 fine musicians led by Kris Kimura, Wasabi Big Band has the sole purpose to entertain by playing great music! Whether it’s hot jazz from the “Roaring Twenties,” swing hits from the 1930’s and 1940’s or Rat Pack standards of the 50’s and 60’s, this band never fails to impress with its high energy and finesse. UIW Cardinal Jazz Band: The UIW Cardinal Jazz Band performs professional level jazz repertoire that includes swing, funk and Latin. Ensemble membership is open to UIW students, faculty and members of the community. The Cardinal Jazz Band is currently the only college jazz ensemble from San Antonio to have performed at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (Summer 2009). The ensemble also performs regularly at the Texas Jazz Festival in Corpus Christi, St. Mary's Fiesta Jazz Festival and over venues. Read more...
