The Jazz Break at Noon is KRTU’s weekly, mid-day program. Hosted by Music Director Kory Cook, the program is an educational listening session highlighting major artists, styles, and themes from jazz music’s rich history. From rare recordings of the 1930s to today’s most progressive sounds, the Jazz Break at Noon takes you on an educational sonic journey through jazz history.

New and Upcoming Summer Releases
We'll hear new recordings this week from bassist and composer Avishai Cohen, bandleader Lisa Maxwell and her new jazz orchestra, Detroit guitarist Dennis Coffey, and 12-year old piano phenom Brandon Goldberg, among many other releases set for release this month.
June 10 - June 14:
Celebrating the Life and Contributions of Pianist Geri Allen
Composer, pianist and educator Allen was born in Pittsburgh, PA, among many other notable artists from the world of modern jazz, and was the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Pittsburgh during her final years as an accomplished performing artist. This week, we'll hear from many of Allen's recordings, including collaborations with Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Ron Carter, Marcus Belgrave and Terri Lyne Carrington.
June 17 - June 21:
The Legacy of Percussionists in Modern Jazz: From the 1940's to the Present
In conjunction with KRTU's member listening session this week and the music of Mongo Santamaria, we'll listen to various percussionists, beginning with early recordings of Afro-Cuban bebop and Machito to Chano Pozo, Santamaria, Candido Camero, Ray Barretto, Airto Moreira Willie Bobo, Cyro Baptista, Ralph MacDonald, and others.

In the Classroom with Bassist Reggie Workman
This week, we'll listen to some of bassist and educator Reggie Workman's work with John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Eric Dolphy, and some of his more recent work with drummer Andrew Cyrille and saxophonist Oliver Lake. From straight ahead to the avant garde, Workman's unique, strong sound on the instrument has influenced generations of upright bass players.
