The Jazz Break at Noon is KRTU’s weekly, mid-day program. Hosted by Music Director Kory Cook, the program is an educational listening session highlighting major artists, styles, and themes from jazz music’s rich history. From rare recordings of the 1930s to today’s most progressive sounds, the Jazz Break at Noon takes you on an educational sonic journey through jazz history.

New Releases for Summer 2020
Since mid-March of this year, current jazz artists face the elimination of live performance opportunities across the globe. In lieu of touring and booking shows, musicians entered studios to record and release some of the year's biggest surprises so far. The return of trumpeter Charles Tolliver and vibraphonist Roy Ayers, respectively and in over a decade, along with a reuniting of four modern masters with their first release in over 25 years are among the highlights, Also, music from Sara Schoenbeck w/ Wayne Horvitz, Black Art Jazz Collective, Norah Jones, guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Derrick Hodge, and many others fill our shelves for the summer of 2020. We'll hear select cuts this week from many of those new releases for the season.

A Trailblazing Decade from Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis
Diverse visual artist Paul Klee once wrote "a living art must break away from theory and achieve new order in organic fulfillment." The scope of work from saxophonist and composer James Brandon Lewis released since his debut in 2010 suggests the musician took this idea to heart while navigating his own career path in jazz and improvised music. This week on the Jazz Break at Noon, we'll hear the tenor saxophone of Lewis leading different ensembles in quintet, quartet, trio, and duo settings.

Honoring the 2020 NEA Jazz Masters
Since 1982, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship is a significant and important honor that our nation presents to jazz artists. Living legends who have made exceptional contributions to the progression of jazz join the ranks of selected artists this month for a special virtual concert celebrating the 2020 NEA Jazz Masters. Bobby McFerrin. Roscoe Mitchell, Reggie Workman, and Dorthaan Kirk are the award recipients this year, and we'll hear many selections in diverse sets of music from the careers of each artist, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.

Imagination And Intention with Bassist and Composer Linda May Han Oh
Born in Malaysia and raised in Australia, Linda May Han Oh brings intelligence, wit, and a fresh perspective to her own deliberate compositions and recording collaborations in a growing body of work as a composer and bassist. Currently, Oh performs and records regularly with guitarist Pat Metheny. But she also leads her own rewarding sessions, debuting with 2012's Initial Here on Greenleaf Music. We'll explore the imagination of Linda May Han Oh all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.
