The Jazz Break at Noon is KRTU’s weekly, mid-day program. Hosted by Music Director Kory Cook, the program is an educational listening session highlighting major artists, styles, and themes from jazz music’s rich history. From rare recordings of the 1930s to today’s most progressive sounds, the Jazz Break at Noon takes you on an educational sonic journey through jazz history.
August 31-September 4: The Immortal Charlie Parker: A Centennial Celebration
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of saxophonist and composer Charlie "Bird" Parker, born August, 29, 1920, in Kansas City, KS. We'll hear music and contributions from Bird during our week-long centennial celebration for the bebop creator and jazz giant, highlighting the icon's Verve years, collaborations with Diz and Miles, and imaginative versions of Bird songs along the modern jazz flightpath.
September 7 - September 11: Take the High Road with Gregory Porter
When Gregory Porter shouts “Hey..the motor city is burnin' ya’ll” in reference to the 1967 Detroit city riots on the 2010 track “1960 What?,” you feel the message. It’s a cry, not for surrender but for hope and love to overcome. The Grammy-winning vocalist and songwriter Porter graces us with latest album "All Rise," and this week we'll hear tracks from the uplifting release, along with highlights from the singer's extraordinary career in music.
September 14-September 18: Jazz'SAlive - The History of San Antonio's Jazz Festival
In lieu of this year's festival cancellation, we'll keep the spirit of San Antonio's jazz festival alive from its premiere to highlights from last year's event, with recordings from headliners dating back to the mid 1980's and music from Dave Brubeck, Chico Hamilton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jane Monheit, Ramsey Lewis, Lionel Hampton Big Band, and the recent Sammy Miller & the Congregation. We'll also hear exclusive interviews with this year's proposed headliners as we look forward to next year's Jazz"SAlive in Travis Park.
September 21 - September 25: Chasin the Trane: Ten Years of Coltrane's Sound
Between 1957 and the tenor saxophone icon's death ten years later, John William Coltrane created a legacy in jazz so strong that it's often difficult to decipher whether any musician in the genre who arrived after him wasn't influenced by his sound in one form or another. Coltrane recordings on the Prestige, Blue Note, Atlantic, and Impulse labels all represent the saxophonist and composer's highly unique and influential stature in jazz and improvised music. We'll hear those recordings this week while we celebrate Coltrane's birthday.
September 28 - October 2: Listener Requests for the Fall Membership Drive
The KRTU Fall Membership Drive is scheduled for September 25-October 9, 2020, and this year we'll continue in the tradition of taking listener requests with your support during the drive to be played on the Jazz Break at Noon.
